With the Trump administration, the USA, which has decided to impose an embargo on Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE, continues to work to change the network equipment in the country. According to information shared by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel, it turned out that US operators made a $ 5.6 billion request to replace their existing network equipment.
Costs rise for change
The FCC, which started a program to support small telecom operators in 2020 to replace equipment that puts the country’s national security at risk, allocated a budget of around $1.8 billion for the necessary replacement. After two years, while the country’s major service providers such as Verizon completed the replacement of network equipment, it is reported that 181 applications were made from small operators until January 28, 2022.
With the new figures announced, we can say that the FCC, which has a budget to meet only one-third of the demands, will make new requests in order to provide sufficient funds, while replacing Chinese equipment will cost the USA quite expensive.
