NASA announced a delay for testing the Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule for the Artemis I lunar mission Wednesday. The agency is now chasing possible launch opportunities in April and May. The latest delay comes after a minor technical glitch put it to an expected launch in February that was pushed back from a launch in late 2021.
Space missions, especially those with new equipment, face various delays. SLS and Orion hang stowed inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Artemis teams now aim to launch Artemis I before March.
NASA made a statement on the subject
The Space Agency recently made a statement on the subject. In this regard, “NASA has included additional time to complete closing activities within the VAB before first launching its integrated rocket and spacecraft. While crews are not working on any major issues, engineers continue to work on final closing missions and flight termination system tests prior to wetsuit rehearsal.” said.
NASA broadcast a media teleconference Wednesday with an Artemis I update. The agency stressed that the SLS is a big rocket and the team took care to be meticulous about testing and preparation before launch.
There are no humans in the Artemis I mission. The mission revolves around traveling around the moon. This sets the tone for NASA’s ambitious plans to return humans to the moon.
