Chinese technology giant Huawei has sued the Swedish government in international arbitration. The company is demanding compensation for the loss caused by not being allowed to participate in the tender held for the supply of 5G mobile communication equipment.
Huawei wants to pay 5.2 billion Swedish kronor ($560 million) compensation in the first place to compensate for its losses, but this figure may increase to 25-30 billion Swedish kronor (2.7-3.2 billion dollars). The conflict between Huawei and Sweden started a year ago.
“The aim is to intimidate other countries”
The Swedish Post and Telecom Administration (PTS) did not allow Huawei to participate in the tender for the supply of 5G mobile communications equipment at that time. Officials stated that the decision was taken on the grounds of security issues. Because Huawei is thought to be closely linked with the Chinese government.
According to experts, this action of Huawei has not only a desire to receive compensation, but also a strategic direction. The company wants to intimidate any country that doesn’t want to let it participate in 5G equipment auctions by extorting a sizable sum of money from Sweden.
