Tensions continue between Epic Games and Apple. The long-running lawsuit was settled last September, with the court ruling that Apple should allow third-party payment options for in-app purchases in the App Store.
Epic Games wants to overturn the court rulings in favor of Apple in other charges, since the only result against Apple in the case, where 10 different charges are evaluated, is related to payment options, and the developer has many allies in this regard.
Epic Games’ supporters are multiplying
Following the conclusion of the lawsuit, Epic Games appealed. Recently, 35 state attorneys general, Microsoft and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and a coalition of many organizations submitted requests to the clean court to overturn the previous ruling that Apple’s control over the App Store did not violate antitrust laws. “Apple’s behavior has hurt and still does harm to mobile app developers and millions of citizens,” the report submitted to the court said.
Microsoft stated that decisions in Apple’s favor could allow it to use iOS control to curb competition in adjacent markets, and said there should be no Apple between companies with the online service and iPhone users.
The number of supporters of Epic Games is increasing and it is emphasized that Apple’s monopolistic approach should be prevented.
The report, submitted by the coalition to the court of appeal, is more as part of support for Epic Games than an official document. It is entirely up to the court whether to consider the report or not. With all these developments, the court’s conclusion in this appeal process, which is expected to take a long time like the previous case, is eagerly awaited.
