Facebook brought end-to-end encryption to Messenger in 2016, but the feature is still not active by default so the feature has to be turned on from the menu. When end-to-end encryption was activated, users could not benefit from some chat features, but this is changing. Meta announced that Facebook Messenger will have more features in end-to-end encrypted chats and calls.
Messenger gets new features in end-to-end encryption
End-to-end encryption for group chats, including voice and video calls, is now available to all users in Messenger. The company feature: “You can now choose to connect with friends and family privately and securely,” the company announced.
Other features offered include sending a notification to the user when someone takes a screenshot in disappearing messages. In addition, GIFs and stickers can now be used in end-to-end encrypted messages.
The company announced that they also support reacting to a message, thanks to the options that open by tapping and holding a message. Users will be able to reply to specific messages in end-to-end encrypted chats by holding down or swiping.
Typing indicators will also be available in Messenger to show when others are typing a message in one-on-one or group chats. Message Forwarding feature is coming so that a message can be shared with others. In this way, a message can be shared with one or more people or groups via the ‘Next’ button that appears when you press and hold the message for a long time.
Press and hold on any media, that media can be recorded. Users will be presented with new options to edit that media when posting a photo or video from their gallery.
Meta aims to provide the experience in normal chats with these features for end-to-end encrypted chats in Messenger. End-to-end encryption by default is expected to be available on Facebook Messenger in 2023.
