Global technology leader Epson has announced its Annual Sustainability Report. According to the report, Epson aims to switch to 100% renewable energy in its operations by 2023. Until 2050, underground fossil resources will not be used in any of its activities.
Beyond Epson’s investment in its own transformation, the report details innovations such as heatless technologies that will help every customer achieve a sustainable future. Epson aims to reduce total emissions under the 1.5°C scenario by 2030, while by 2050 it aims to use carbon negative and zero underground resources. Epson will ensure sustainability in a circular economy while reducing the environmental impact of products and services and supply chains.
First announced in 2008
In 2008 Epson created its Environmental Vision 2050 as a statement of environmental targets by 2050. Epson revised its environmental vision in 2018, with the United Nations’ adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement charting a course towards decarbonisation.
In March 2021, the company revised its vision and set specific targets that reflect its strong commitment to addressing important societal issues such as decarbonization and resource recycling.
It uses resources repeatedly
Epson will dramatically change the way natural resources are used. The brand, which plans to reduce its emissions by 44 percent by 2025, will not use underground resources from 2050. The company will use previously mined underground resources as existing surface resources. Epson considers ecosystem capital to be renewable and inexhaustible if used wisely. In the natural world, solar energy is the only energy source used, and all substances circulate without producing waste. Epson strives to learn from nature, avoid generating waste and reuse resources in its business operations.

The Sustainability Report details Epson’s customer-oriented and sustainability-oriented innovations. For example, heatless printers reduce power consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 83%. The adoption of these technologies throughout Europe results in a reduction of 1 billion kWh in annual energy use and 410,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Epson’s heatless technologies inspire its solution partnership with National Geographic and its efforts to reverse the thawing of the frozen soil layer at the poles and the accompanying increase in methane emissions.
