New devices continue to join us in the smartphone market every day. But on the other hand, there are models whose software support is terminated by unplugging them by the manufacturer. Today, OnePlus announced that it has ended its support for the 2 model.
Software support for OnePlus 6 and 6T has ended!
The OnePlus 6 and 6T models were launched six months apart in 2018. Devices using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and introduced with Android Oreo were on the agenda as they offered 6 to 12 GB RAM options. However, after 3 years, the company announced that it has now ended its software support.
OnePlus 6 comes pre-installed with Android Oreo, while later that same year, OnePlus 6T upgraded its software version to Android 9 Pie. Then, as part of OnePlus’ three-year commitment to software updates, the duo was officially updated to Android 11 and OxygenOS 11.
A silent announcement was made on the OnePlus forums for devices currently running OxygenOS 11. It was said that these models will finally receive the December 2021 safety structure. But Android 12 and OxygenOS 12 will not receive OTA.
The Never Settle team said the following in the article they shared on the forum:
Hello guys, after 3 major updates and over 3 years of updates, around 60 Closed Beta releases and over 30 Open Beta releases, now it’s time to close a chapter and announce the end of official software support for the OnePlus 6 and 6T.
Thanks to your support, we were able to continually improve the software experience on these devices. Also, we can’t thank you enough for your constant feedback. We would like to share a special word of thanks to all beta testers who have been testing the features since 2018 before they are released to the stable version. You played a big part in optimizing OxygenOS to provide an overall better experience.
Once again, we would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all of you for the tremendous support along the way. None of this would have been possible without you. We will continue to listen to your voice to develop even better products in the future.
If you’re considering using the OnePlus 6 or 6T in 2022 and beyond, you’ll need to combat potential security flaws or consider using third-party software channels. Fortunately, if you’re considering sticking with your OnePlus 6 and 6T smartphone, there are a number of third-party ROMs available that can help bridge the software support gap. In fact, many users have already started to recommend LineageOS.
