PC gamers have come across the Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) anti-cheat service in most games. Recently the software became free. This means that we will see more players. Valve wants as many games as possible to run for the Steam Deck. The use of anti-cheat software remains a major obstacle to its implementation.

Steam Deck uses a compatibility layer called Proton that allows Windows games to run on the Linux platform. Epic recently announced that EAC will work with Proton and can be enabled by developers with a few clicks. This seemed like good news given its popularity. But now it has become clear that this may not be good news.

Vermintide 2 developer commented on Steam Deck

The Vermintide 2 developer said that for most games, this will not be that easy. The build uses EAC. It may not be the right kind as it turns out though. On the Steam forum, players responded to a thread asking for Proton support for games. Here, too, he explained that there are actually two versions of EAC. One uses Epic’s online services, while the other does not.

This is good news for those using Epic’s online services. It turns out, though, that this may only apply to a few new and first-party Epic games. For example, Vermintide 2 comes across as one of the many games that take advantage of the version of Epic’s EAC service that does not use online services.

Easy Anti-Cheat is seen as a problem

The developers estimated that it would take a long time to convert an offline version of Epic to its online side. The games get Proton support and become Steam Deck compatible. But whether this is the right move is still in the research phase.

Other development teams such as Tripwire Interactive have pointed out a possible compatibility issue with EAC. In addition, DayZ developers stated that it is not possible to bring their games to the Steam Deck. Many developers think this is because of the BattleEye anti-cheat software.

Considering the number of games that these types of issues can affect, Steam Deck seems to have a problem. It is thought that if enough people take advantage of the platform, it will gain support.
