Microsoft seems to be adding a new scrolling feature to the Edge web browser very soon. In the last Edge Canary build, a new sign called “Increase screen refresh rate when scrolling” appeared and is notable for using Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology to provide this experience.

The description of this new feature is as follows: “Allows Windows to temporarily increase the refresh rate while scrolling (provided the device has a VRR panel and a supporting driver). This provides an overall smoother scrolling experience – Windows”

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) panels such as AMD Freesync / G-sync Compatible and G-sync panels are among the panels that can change the refresh rates within a certain range. Such displays do not have a fixed refresh rate output and can therefore increase or decrease their refresh rate via VRR intervals to sync with the refresh rates of games or content as long as they are within this range.

This new Edge feature will basically take advantage of this technology to increase the refresh rate and provide more smoothness when swiping up or down.

This feature might work similarly to AMD’s Radeon Chill. Chill increases the refresh rate in situations of intense action and when user input is higher, but decreases it when there is little or no user input.
