The frequent theft and ownership of content created and shared on the Internet causes many platforms to set up formal procedures for resolving and appealing copyright disputes. When it comes to allegations such as content theft and fraud, Instagram also has mechanisms that the complainant can apply and those who think that they have been unfairly complained can object.
However, this system has been heavily abused recently. Cyber security company Sophos has warned users against cyber-attackers who are trying to take over their targeted Instagram accounts, accompanied by messages posing as copyright infringement.

Sophos experts advise users to avoid falling into this and similar traps:
- – Even if you accidentally visit the identity theft site, do not go any further. Think twice before entering your information in the forms that appear.
- – Use a password manager and two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible. Password managers detect this when you visit a fake site that you have never encountered before and prevent your password from being filled automatically. Two-step verification, where only the password is not enough to access the account, also complicates the work of the attackers.
