The Popcorn Time application, which once paved the way for watching pirated movies as easily as watching Netflix, has been completely shut down. In fact, its original developers had already shut down the service in 2014. However, since the project was open source, other developers were able to pick up where they left off. Popcorn Time has “dead” and “revived” several more times since then.

The developers have put a graph on the Popcorn Time website showing the performance of the search word “Popcorn Time” over the past seven years. Here it is clearly seen how the interest in the application has fallen. From the perspective of Google Trends, the interest in the application first rises, then falls and never rises again.

According to Bloomberg’s report, the group behind Popcorn Time announced the closure in an email. There is not a single sentence about whether the reason for the closure is legal or related to the lawsuits filed. However, at the time, Hollywood studios sued the service and some users who used this service. Popcorn Time operators, on the other hand, defended themselves by saying that they do not keep these movies on their servers because the system is based on peer-to-peer use.
