Space, which is always an interesting topic, has been increasing its popularity especially recently with the contribution of entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Undoubtedly, work in this direction has gained momentum. It is now possible to say almost true to the discourses we have heard for years, such as traveling to Mars and space tourism. So, what dangers await the space colonists who set out to establish a life on different planets in the future? Charles Cockell, professor of astrobiology at Edinburgh University, described the worst case scenario.
Of course, not everything will be rosy for future space colonists. We saw the other side of the coin in the movie The Martian, with a somewhat optimistic picture. So, if space farming and crop systems fail and things get worse, what methods might the chosen space colonists resort to? Cockell gives the chilling answer to this question: “They will eat each other if there is no other way to survive.”
Pointing to Sir John Franklin’s discovery of the North Pole in 1845 that caused the crew to eat each other to underline the issue he mentioned, Cockell said, “Franklin and his crew were lost and stranded while trying to find the Northwest Passage on their cruise in the late 19th century. and eventually turned into cannibals,” he says.
Of course, the professor’s picture is rather pessimistic, but there may be some truth to it. Because as Cockell puts it, “If you’re going to send 20 people for a month into a deadly environment a few hundred million kilometers from Earth, you have to be really confident that it’s going to work.”
