TikTok released its Windows software developed for Live Studio in the past few weeks. It was alleged that TikTok used the codes in the OBS project and there was a license violation.

Developed with the GNU GPLv2 license, the codes of OBS can be used in different projects. However, according to the GNU GPLv2 rules, the source code of the developed software has to be shared.

The claim that TikTok used the source code of OBS Studio

Open source OBS Studio, one of the most preferred software by publishers in the world, came to the fore with a new claim. Screenshots, first published by Twitter user HunterAP, revealed that the TikTok Live Studio software contains codes for OBS.

Making a statement on the subject, OBS business development manager Ben Torell stated that TikTok should share the codes of the Live Studio software. Underlining that the company violated the GPL license, Torell explained that the Live Studio software includes source codes for different software other than OBS.

TikTok has not yet responded to these claims. Torell stressed that the OBS project responded to GPL violations in “good faith” and would be happy to work with TikTok as long as it complies with the license.

If the claims are true, TikTok must share the source codes of the software it has developed. OBS Studio officials state that they are waiting for an explanation from TikTok on the subject.
