The coronavirus pandemic, which started to fall from the world’s agenda gradually thanks to vaccination, came to the forefront of the agenda again with the explosion of the variant named omicron. The variant, which reached almost every country and spread rapidly, according to experts, at an unprecedented level, also brought the effectiveness of vaccines into discussion.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), made new statements about the course of the pandemic. Speaking about New Year’s Eve and Christmas in these statements, Ghebreyesus said that the events held for the purpose of celebration should be cancelled. “The events will lead to an increase in the number of cases, overloading health systems and more deaths. In some cases, this may mean canceling or postponing events,” the WHO Director said, adding that this would be better than deaths.
“Don’t be fooled by foolish thoughts”
WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was not the only authorized person to speak about the omicron variant of the coronavirus. WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan also made statements on the subject. Saying that it is unwise to believe that omicron has been mildly circumvented based on the available data, the scientist emphasized that the new variant is able to escape from the immune systems.
“People who have been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 are likely to be infected.” Using the expressions, Soumya Swaminathan stated that the new variant spreads faster than the delta, according to the reviews. Therefore, the scientist, who warned about the reminder dose, stated that especially sensitive bodies should be given reminder doses without wasting time.
