Square Enix announced in an apology posted on its official website today that they have been forced to temporarily suspend sales of Final Fantasy 14. The reason behind this decision is that Endwalker, the latest expansion pack to the game, has received much more attention than expected.
Endwalker met with great interest
Final Fantasy 14, the MMORPG game played with Square Enix’s monthly subscription system, became inaccessible after the new expansion pack Endwalker was presented to the players.
Square Enix admitted that they reached 1 million new players in total after the arrival of Endwalker, and that such a measure was taken to prevent the servers from crashing. However, after this negative development, Square Enix is trying to win the hearts of the players.
Naoki Yoshida, one of the game’s producing team and general manager, explained that a large number of people playing Endwalker caused Square to exceed its server capacity. To reduce the long wait times for players logging in, the company has decided to stop selling Final Fantasy 14 to new players to temporarily halt the wave of incoming server traffic.
Yoshida said that they had to limit wait times due to game hours exceeding server capacity, and Final Fantasy 14 Starter Edition and Complete Edition sales will not be held for a while. In addition, players will not be able to take advantage of the free trial version temporarily. Square Enix will release an official statement on when the restriction will be lifted.
