The “Recall” feature, which Microsoft plans to bring to Windows 11 and aims to record desktop activities, has been postponed once again due to security and privacy concerns.

This artificial intelligence-supported feature records the user’s on-screen actions at regular intervals and makes this data searchable when necessary, thus allowing users to easily find a document they have previously worked on or a tab they have closed.

Recall won’t be available until the new year

Although the feature seems like it could be a life saver when necessary, it has become the focus of discussions, especially in the areas of privacy and security, since the first day it was announced. The fact that the Recall feature will monitor all the user’s activities thanks to an artificial intelligence constantly running on the computer attracted reaction among users.

In particular, the collection of personal and private information by such a feature opens the door to problems that may arise in the event of a possible malware. Some experts also underlined worse possibilities, such as the possibility that the data obtained could be stored without encryption.

Microsoft is making improvements to privacy and security

Microsoft began working on various improvements to Recall, taking into account feedback regarding privacy and security concerns. The company, which plans to take measures such as making it mandatory for users to log in with biometric verification such as Windows Hello and making Recall a completely optional feature, was planning to launch it before the end of October under normal circumstances, but these plans were postponed once again.

Microsoft stated in a statement to The Verge that the first test version will be available to select users via Windows Insiders in December. Although it is stated that Microsoft is working insistently on Recall, there is a possibility that the feature will be canceled completely if it does not meet the required standards in terms of security and privacy.
