Although social media is seen as a place for interaction, easy access to information and an escape from unpleasant moments of the day, it can also threaten the mental health of users in very dangerous areas. A study revealed which social media platform is the most dangerous, especially in terms of sexual crimes committed in the virtual world. Here are the details of that platform and research…

Snapchat is the most dangerous social media platform!

It has been determined that almost half of the crimes reported regarding sexual messages towards children in the UK took place on Snapchat. According to national police data, a total of 7,062 cases of child sexual contact were recorded in 2023-2024, and 48 percent of these cases occurred on Snapchat.

In its statement, the NSPCC states that Snapchat has serious deficiencies in protecting children and that the platform has become much more attractive to abusers, especially due to its features such as disappearing messages. NSPCC Child Safety Policy Manager Rani Govender said content reported on Snapchat was not taken seriously and this had negative effects on children.

The UK government is planning to take stricter measures against platforms such as Snapchat. With the ‘Online Security Law’ that will come into force in December, the responsibility of technology companies to protect children will increase. Under this law, platforms will be required to publish their assessments of illegal content risks.

In a statement to the BBC, a Snapchat representative stated that they have tightened content control to protect young people and suspended accounts in cases of violations.
