Australian scientists announced that they are in the process of developing a neuromorphic supercomputer that can perform 228 trillion synaptic operations in 1 second, like the human brain.

Supercomputer equivalent to the human brain

Artificial intelligence, one of the most popular technologies of recent times, requires a lot of processing power to work. The energy consumed in this area, where NVIDIA is the sole vendor, is also quite high. The world’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions to cope with global warming are negatively affected by this energy consumption. NVIDIA servers consume more energy than most small countries.

The solution to this problem lies in our computers, but these computers are not desktops or laptops, but our brains, which are our laptops. It is quite easy for the human brain to perceive the complex and unsorted data coming from our environment and highlight the ones we need for our work. Moreover, it consumes very little energy compared to electronic devices.

That’s why scientists from Western Sydney University take our brains as an example in the neuromorphic supercomputer project they call DeepSouth. When completed, this machine will be able to imitate the neural network in the human brain and the movements of that network at a level equivalent to the human brain. Professor Andre van Schaik, one of the researchers, says that imitating neural beats in the human brain with GPUs and CPUs is very slow and inefficient, and their own systems will change this. The new machine will be used in biomedical studies, robotics, space research and large-scale artificial intelligence models.

DeepSouth, on the other hand, basically aims to transmit and process very small data very quickly. The aim of the project, which is also supported by Dell and Intel, is not to make the most powerful device, but to create the fastest and most efficient system. Perhaps DeepSouth is taking the first steps in an approach that will pave the way for new research and change computing in the future.

DeepSouth is expected to start operating in April 2024. DeepSouth’s capacity can be increased or decreased according to need.
