We Asked a “Vehicle Technology” Expert: How Can We Extend the Life of Our Cars?

We asked Mustafa Toros, who is a graduate of Ege University Automotive Technologies and also teaches "Vehicle Techniques" in driving license courses, how we can extend the life of automobiles and received valuable answers.

As economic conditions worried us more and more each day, we started to hold on tightly to what we had. “What if my phone breaks down and I have to buy a new one?”, “If my car breaks down, how can I buy another car?” Our fears such as these have increased even more.

Therefore, it is very important that we learn how to extend the life of our vehicle and act in the light of this information. Let’s take a look at what we can do, with the contributions of Mustafa Lodos.

Our teacher discusses the subject starting from the Industrial Revolution.

The cycle created by the Industrial Revolution, which started in the 19th century, is “needs” or “priorities”; increased diversity in machine device production. Although this development may be seen as meeting our comfort and needs, Mustafa Hodja argues that it is not actually so.

According to him, although the industry seems to need us, consumers are dependent on the industry for the cycle to continue because the manufacturer must first sell the car and then its spare parts to make money. Many of us think that the manufacturer makes money when he sells the car, but as our teacher said, the real profit is in spare parts.

“If it were like the light bulb in America that has never gone out since 1901, this wheel would never turn.”

To put it differently, if we are going to use these technologies, we must also accept financial obedience. Every part installed in the car has a certain lifespan for turning the wheel and is designed and produced accordingly.

“If we are going to benefit from automobile technologies, our main goal should be to reach the current life of the vehicle we purchase and to ensure that the money out of our pocket does not exceed what it should be.” Our teacher adds and lists what we can do for this.

We need to neglect the cleaning of the vehicle.

The cleanliness of the vehicle’s body (the part that carries passengers and cargo, other than the main parts), interior cleanliness and engine cleanliness are of great importance. If cleaning is not done, not only mechanical problems may arise in the long run, but also the external appearance will be negatively affected. Therefore, we can extend the life of the vehicle by cleaning it regularly.

We must take precautions to protect the paint.

Our teacher explains the subject of paint as follows:

“Since the dipping method is used in painting while the vehicle is being produced, rust/decay may occur if sufficient care is not taken when removing and installing the exterior parts in cases such as an accident. Methods such as paint protection and wax polishing extend the life of the exterior parts; thus, they indirectly extend the life of the car.”

We should not skip buying a protection cover.

Purchasing a protection cover that covers the bottom of the engine part of the vehicle prevents possible damage to the engine in cases such as foreign objects or animals entering. In addition, if there is no engine cover, the air flow cannot be controlled and aerodynamics will be affected, increasing fuel consumption.

In today’s cars, many electronic components are located in the engine part. Exposure of all these systems to external factors may also negatively affect the vehicle’s electrical systems. Having a protection cover will automatically extend the life of the vehicle.

We should never neglect periodic maintenance.

According to our teacher, if we want to use the engine’s existing life to the fullest, we have to have it maintained regularly, paying attention to the mileage-based periods in the manual.

Otherwise, engine performance will decrease, fuel consumption will increase, brake problems will occur, tire life will be shortened, and electrical and charging system problems will occur. In short, if we want to extend the life of our vehicle, we should not skip periodic maintenance.

How and where we use our vehicle is also important.

Our teacher said that the warranty period given on automobiles is ⅓ or ¼ of its life; He emphasizes that what we need to pay attention to is where and how we use the vehicle for the rest of its life.

In short, driving in mountainous, hollow, extremely hot or cold weather; It causes the car to age faster. Also, our driving style is important at this point.

Abrasive and aggressive usage is another action that shortens the life of the vehicle.

An aggressive driving style often involves rapid acceleration and sudden braking. In this case, wear increases and extra load occurs on the engine, transmission, brake systems and tires.

So, if we want to extend the life of our vehicle, we should not use it aggressively when we sit in the driver’s seat, we should treat it naively so that it does not let us down.

Another situation we should avoid is loading the vehicle more than necessary.

Suspension systems, brake systems and tires in vehicles; Since it is designed for a certain load capacity, trying to carry a load above this capacity may cause excessive strain.

Chassis, differential, tires, brake systems and shock absorbers; Suspension systems such as springs and arms may be damaged under load and cause deterioration. In short, if we want our vehicle to grow old with us, we definitely need to put more load on it.
