Apple is trying to avoid an ongoing legal battle with the European Union. According to Reuters, Apple will offer its competitors access to NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. The European Commission filed antitrust charges against the company regarding the Apple Pay payment system in May 2022.

As a result of the investigation that has been ongoing since 2020, the Commission’s Executive Vice President, Margrethe Vestager, stated that there are indications that Apple has restricted third-party access to the technologies necessary to develop rival mobile wallet solutions on its devices.

Apple’s current offer could save the company from a hefty fine and resolve the case against it, but there’s no guarantee of progress. The commission will likely meet with Apple’s competitors and customers within the next month to determine whether to accept the offer. More than 2,500 banks across Europe use Apple Pay.
