Apple has released the last developer beta before making the stable version of iOS 17.2 available for download, and according to the release notes, the upcoming update brings support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series smartphones. Apple says the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro already support Qi2, but there aren’t any Qi2 chargers available for purchase yet.

Qi2 adds a MagSafe-like magnet ring to the Qi wireless charging standard, increasing the charging speed to 15W. This means a lot for iPhones, as it means charging at MagSafe speed without paying high MagSafe prices. Currently, when you charge an iPhone on a non-MagSafe-certified magnetic wireless charger, you can get a maximum speed of 7.5W, but MagSafe-certified chargers can go up to 15W.

The biggest unknown at the moment is the charging speed you can get when you place an iPhone 13 or 14 on a Qi2 charger. Although Apple has previously confirmed that the iPhone 15 family can charge up to 15W on Qi2 chargers, it has not announced whether Qi2 will come to previous iPhones.

Since Apple usually releases the final developer beta of iOS a few days before publicly releasing the stable version, the new iOS can be expected to be available this week or early next week. The update will also include the Diary app, the ability for iPhone 15 Pro phones to capture spatial video, a fix for iPhone 15 wireless charging issues in certain vehicles, a setting that allows you to change the default sound for notifications, and more.
