When Popular Science started to be published in 1872, it attracted attention with its content on science, technology and nature. The magazine attracted attention in a short time and became one of the most prestigious publications in its field. The magazine, which has seen world wars, epidemics, crises and the cold war since then, ended its 151-year journey.
It was known that the magazine, simply called PopSci, had difficulties in recent years. First, the publication cycle of the journal was changed in 2018. PopSci, which normally comes out once a month, started to be published every 3 months starting from that year. In 2021, the magazine turned completely digital.
The digital version of Popular Science has also been terminated
PopSci editor Purbita Saha, who shared a post on LinkedIn regarding the issue, stated that she was “disappointed, angry and dismayed that the magazine owners shut down a pioneering publication that has been adapting to change for 151 years in a five-minute Zoom call.” PopSci, which ended its magazine format, also laid off five editors and several employees this month. Recently, many websites and magazines have resorted to firing their science editors.
Cathy Herbert, Communications Director of Recurrent Ventures, which also owns Popular Science magazine, said PopSci should evolve beyond a digital magazine. From now on, Populer Science will only publish articles on its own website. It is also stated that video content will be produced for PopSci.
