Earlier this year, WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) announced the wireless charging standard Qi 2.0. With the Qi 2.0 standard, based on Apple’s MagSafe technology, accessories can magnetically stick to the back of the phone. With its new announcement, the consortium announced that Qi 2.0 supported accessories will be released at the end of the year.

Companies such as Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge have started to develop new wireless chargers and accessories for the iPhone 15 series. Android phone manufacturers are also expected to adapt the Qi 2.0 standard to their phones. Thus, it will be possible to use MagSafe style accessories on Android phones.

Offers many innovations compared to Qi 1.2

With the Qi 2.0 standard, in addition to magnetic adhesion, developments such as 15 Watt charging speed, increase in power efficiency, better foreign object detection and security features that prevent damage to the device are offered. There are two profiles in the Qi 2.0 standard. The first is MPP (Magnetic Power Profile), which is based on MagSafe and has the Qi 2 logo. The second is an improved version of the existing profile EPP (Extended Power Profile), which does not contain magnets but complies with the Qi 2 standard and supports 30 Watt charging speed.

However, Chinese manufacturers such as OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi are not expected to adopt the Qi 2.0 standard as they have developed their own wireless charging protocols and reached a charging speed of 50 Watts. However, Samsung and Google may release phones that support the new standard.
