In the dynamic environment of the game world, Starfield, the space-based RPG game that Bethesda released two months ago, is experiencing an unexpected decline on Steam. Despite a strong launch initially earning it the title of “the biggest Bethesda game launch to date”, current Steam statistics have revealed that more players are ‘seeking solace in an old friend’.

12 year old Skyrim is more played than Starfield

As of the latest data, a total of 15,386 players are currently participating in Skyrim-related adventures on Steam. This number includes 1,610 players in the 2011 original version and 13,776 players in the 2016 Special Edition. Notably, the combined 24-hour peak for both Skyrim versions is 25,181 players, and that figure goes even higher when VR players are taken into account.

In stark contrast, the highly anticipated space exploration game Starfield currently has 11,563 players navigating its interstellar landscapes. Although the 24-hour peak for Starfield reached 23,920 players, the game’s momentum appears to have waned after the initial surge.

While Starfield surpassed both Skyrim releases at launch, reaching an all-time Steam peak of 330,723 players, the chart shows a decline in lifetime players. Despite its initial success and breaking Skyrim’s concurrent player record on Steam, Starfield’s current player base on the platform has dwindled.

The Game Awards nominations further highlight the changing tides, with Starfield missing from most categories. The game only earned one nomination, competing in the Best RPG category alongside other major releases like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Final Fantasy 16.

While Steam figures provide a certain view of the gaming world, it should not be forgotten that Xbox consoles and Game Pass figures may offer a different perspective. However, the juxtaposition of player bases for Starfield and Skyrim on Steam is notable, especially considering Starfield has just been released as opposed to the much older Skyrim.
