Due to increasing pressure from the European Union, Apple may allow external application installation on iPhones next year. Currently, Apple only allows installing applications from the App Store. If the application is realized, it will be possible to install applications on iPhones from other application stores.

It may arrive in the first half of 2024

According to analyst Mark Gurman, Apple may allow external application installation in the first half of 2024. Previously, it was only possible to install applications outside the App Store via Jailbreak.

However, this will bring some disadvantages to Apple. First, since applications can be installed from outside the App Store, Apple will be deprived of 15% to 30% commission income. The second is that it can be installed without Apple’s instructions for developers, and therefore there is a risk of a security vulnerability.

However, since this is Apple, it will definitely put some mechanisms into action to ensure user privacy and security. According to Gurman, Apple will introduce a “highly controlled system” for developers to submit applications outside of the App Store.

Previously, Apple had said that installing external applications would create user privacy and security problems. However, the EU’s Digital Markets Act defines big technology companies as “gatekeepers” and requires them to open their services to third-party companies and developers to ensure a fairer competitive environment.
