OnePlus is almost ready to join the growing foldable phone market with a foldable device whose strongest rival will inevitably be the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The device, called OnePlus Open, was leaked along with its price and it attracts attention especially with its price.
Since OnePlus is the face of affordable yet well-equipped Android phones, most industry observers expected the Open to sell for $1,500 at most. Some even speculated that the OnePlus Open would probably cost less than that, given that it would likely be an Oppo N3 Fold clone, which isn’t anything too unusual since OnePlus is an Oppo subsidiary.
But according to a new leak, this claim is far from the truth. The leak confirms that the OnePlus Open is a “disguised” N3 Fold. But when it comes to price, the Open will reportedly have a price of $1,699. The foldable device is expected to be available in the US starting October 19.
From the outside, the OnePlus Open looks identical to the Oppo N3 Fold, except for the 1+ logo. The device has a prominent circular camera housing that supposedly houses two 48MP wide and ultra-wide cameras and a 64MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom.
Sources say OnePlus wants to launch Open in European countries, except Germany, where the brand has been banned due to patent infringements on Nokia technologies. It is not yet clear whether the $1,699 price set for the US is tax-free and whether the OnePlus Open will be more expensive than that in Europe.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 retails for $1,799 in the US and €1,899 in most of Europe, but Samsung frequently offers discounts and free storage upgrades of up to 512GB in addition to a trade-in program.
