Google introduced its new flagship phones, the Pixel 8 series, last week. One of the most important innovations announced with these devices was software support. The company stated that it would provide software update support (both security and operating system) to phones for 7 years and went ahead of other companies.
Today, it was revealed that a similar move will come from Samsung. Before Google’s announcement, the South Korean technology giant, which was the leader in the Android ecosystem in terms of software support, stated that it planned to support Galaxy phones for a longer period of time.
Samsung plans to provide security updates to its phones for more than five years
Shin-Chul Baik, a Samsung executive, answered questions from SamMobile during last week’s developer conference. Baik stated that they want to offer security updates to Galaxy phones for more than five years, and that this plan is being discussed at the company.
We can say that one of the reasons for this move by Samsung is to respond to Google. However, Baik states that regulations that put pressure on smartphone manufacturers to extend update support are also effective.
There is no information yet on whether operating system updates will be extended or not.
We would like to point out that the descriptions only cover security updates. There is no information yet on whether operating system updates will be extended. However, it is possible that we will see a move in this regard in the future to get ahead of Google.
Samsung currently offers 5 years of security update support and 4 years of operating system update support for its mid-segment and flagship devices. The company, which offers products at all levels, updates more than 1 billion Galaxy devices monthly and more than 10 billion annually.
