Samsung may increase duration of 5-year security update support

Samsung offers four years of system update and five years of security update support for its current devices. According to a new report, the company is considering extending support for security updates that are compatible with industry standards beyond five years.

Samsung may deliver more than five years of security updates in coming years

Google announced this week that its newest Pixel phones and subsequent devices will now receive seven years of Android operating system and security updates. Following this statement, Samsung made a similar statement at the Samsung Developers Conference 2023 in San Francisco.

At the conference, Shin-Chul Baik, Security Team Chief Engineer and Technical Program Manager for the company’s Mobile eXperience division, explained in a statement that the company is actively discussing what it should do regarding long-term security updates beyond the five-year support currently provided.

Baik also stated that the vision of supporting devices for a longer period of time is compatible with Samsung, and that in light of the new regulations, Samsung is preparing to go beyond the current five-year support period.
