In recent news and rumors, Spotify has started to be mentioned with artificial intelligence-supported features. Last week, Spotify Jam was introduced as a collaborative way to listen to music and create playlists. Additionally, the company decided not to ban AI-generated music on the platform, arguing that it was legitimate as long as it did not involve stealing other artists’ identities.
Now, according to a new news from Tech Crunch, Spotify is testing a new artificial intelligence feature to create artificial intelligence-supported playlists. The feature was discovered in the app’s code by investor Chris Messina, a former technologist.
Messina’s Threads post includes screenshots of the app code with text like “AI playlists” and “playlists based on your requests.” Messina thinks this could be a feature that could be added to the Spotify Blend (Fusion) genre, where customized playlists are created based on users’ musical tastes and the prompts they write.
Although a Spotify spokesperson did not confirm the AI playlists feature, in a statement, “At Spotify, we are constantly innovating and generating ideas to improve our product offerings and deliver value to users. “However, we do not comment on speculation about possible new features and have nothing new to share at this time.”
This feature may be similar to the “Niche Mixes” feature that the company launched in March 2023, where users can create personalized playlists based on the description in the Search tab. Although the Niche Mixes feature seems to be artificial intelligence-supported, the company explained that it is based on Spotify’s personalization algorithms and technology.
Looking at Messina’s theory, we can see that the new AI playlists will also be created using prompts, but unlike Niche Mixes, this ability is only seen in the code of the latest version of the Spotify app, and not in the publicly available app version.
Still, these latest developments further push Spotify’s efforts to add artificial intelligence technologies to its platform. As Spotify’s AI DJ feature rolls out to more countries, it’s clear that the company is testing with artificial intelligence and working on the latest language models to offer more personalization to its users.
