If you still think that Half-Life 3 is coming, new rumors may upset you. Tyler McVicker posted a new YouTube video where he made it clear that Valve has not done any work to continue the brand with Half-Life 3 or any other traditional (meaning mouse and keyboard) Half-Life game.

It seems there is no room to devote resources to a new “traditional” Half-Life game, because right now Valve is, unsurprisingly, completely focused on the Steam Deck. McVicker says that Valve has “added a lot” to the Steam Deck, and given the interest shown in the device, it can be said that he is right about this.

According to McVicker, the most important clue we can see in terms of the game is the codename ‘Citadel’, a Half-Life effort designed specifically to showcase the Steam Deck. According to the YouTuber, Citadel will be a Half-Life-based nostalgia trip and a mix of shooter and RTS, designed to play well with Steam Deck controls (as opposed to mouse and keyboard).

Work on the Citadel has allegedly been put aside for the time being, as Steam Deck is the big focus and wanted to get this critical launch right. However, this project will apparently continue in the future and will be available for handheld console.

How far away this future is is another important question. It could be a few years, or maybe a year and a half, according to PC GamesN, which contacted McVicker. So it can be expected in mid-2023 at the earliest.

All this sounds convincing. Valve will definitely focus on making sure it delivers on the promises made with the Steam Deck, and the project known as the Citadel will serve as a tool to leverage the handset’s marketing efforts in the future and leverage the idea of multiplayer co-op. Of course, it’s important to note that the Citadel rumors surfaced in early 2021 and Valve has denied all claims of the project’s existence.
