NASA shared an interesting image of avocado-like rocks taken by the Mars rover Perseverance.
The photo, taken on September 8, features a pair of rocks that resemble an avocado cut in half. In the background of the photo is the half with its “seed” and flesh removed, and in the foreground is the other half upside down, with a texture resembling an avocado peel.
Perseverance is currently searching Mars’ Jezero Crater for signs of ancient life on the planet, collecting soil and rock samples that can be sent back to Earth. The rover has multiple cameras, two of which include the Mastcam-Z camera, which takes photos of avocado rocks.
This isn’t the first time Perseverance has captured a familiar-looking object on Mars. Earlier this year, the rover photographed a donut-shaped rock large enough to delight Martian Homer Simpson. Perseverance appeared to capture the first image of a “cat” on Mars in 2022. Continuing the animal theme, the bear also spotted a rocky outcrop that resembled a shark fin and a giant crab claw.
