Vitalik Buterin regained control of his T-Mobile account and confirmed that a SIM swapping attack resulted in account X being hacked. Speaking on decentralized social media network Farcaster on September 12, Buterin said he finally recovered his T-Mobile account after the hacker managed to gain control of the account with a SIM swapping attack.
It caused a loss of nearly $700,000
The hacker, who gained access to the Ehereum founder’s X account, earned more than $ 691,000 with the fake NFT campaign. Buterin, who was attacked during the SIM changing process, shook the market. Making a statement on the issue, Buterin said:
“Yes, it was a SIM swap, meaning someone socially engineered T-mobile to take over my phone number. A phone number is enough to reset an X account’s password, even if it is not used as 2FA. Additionally, users can completely remove a phone record from X. I had seen the ‘Phone numbers are not secure, do not authenticate’ advice before, but I didn’t realize that.”
