Phoenix APUs, introduced by AMD last January, brought together the Zen4 and RDNA3 architecture for mobile platforms. So much so that we have seen these APUs used in many different products, from laptops to handheld consoles. Today, the chip giant continues its preparations for affordable Phoenix 2 processors. Today, the first mold images of the new APUs, which will offer minor innovations compared to their predecessors, were shared.

AMD Phoenix 2 processors clarified

We have previously told you that AMD Phoenix 2 processors will debut in a hybrid design, namely Zen 4 and Zen 4c on certain chips. However, new images show that this design will be much different from the Intel P-Core and E-Core configuration. Accordingly, AMD will come up with a large L3 cache with a 2+4 (Zen 4 / Zen 4C) combination.

The images also confirmed that the platform will offer support for DDR5 and LPDDR5 interfaces. Therefore, we can say that the new APUs will appear in both laptops and compact PCs. Another image shows that Phoenix 2 processors are based on the “GFX103” or RDNA 3 architecture, similar to its predecessor. However, with the innovations made in the architecture, better efficiency in terms of price performance will be offered.

This new design is just a test case for AMD’s future APUs, and we’ll see a more mature implementation in the Strix “Ryzen 8000” APU family coming next year. Currently, AMD has started to gradually roll out the Phoenix 2 APU series on certain platforms.

According to tests, at default clock speeds, the Zen 4C cores on the chip are slightly slower than the Zen 4 classic cores. However, when using a fixed 3.2 GHz clock frequency, we see that the performance is almost the same on all three core variants. Therefore, while AMD Zen 4C cores provide higher efficiency at lower frequencies, Zen 4 classic cores offer the best efficiency at higher frequencies.

It has not yet been announced which upcoming devices AMD Phoenix 2 APUs will power. However, it has been confirmed that the Ryzen Z1 platform, which has not yet been released, is actually one of the Phoenix2 processors. Therefore, we can say that the wait will not be long.
