Artificial intelligence, which has recently appeared in almost every part of our lives, continues to affect the medical world. In this context; A new study by scientists has enabled a woman who has been unable to speak for 20 years due to brain stem paralysis to “speak” again, thanks to artificial intelligence.

A woman named Ann Johnson, now in her 50s, suffered a brain stem stroke at the age of 30 and completely lost her ability to speak. Traditional methods have not helped fix this problem over the years. However, experts working at the University of San Francisco and the University of Berkeley, serving in the USA, discovered that artificial intelligence can solve this problem. The study yielded results and the woman, who could not speak for 20 years, can now speak as before.

A special brain implant has been developed

Scientists have developed a special brain implant for Ann Johnson. This implant, which consists of 235 electrodes, is integrated with a special artificial intelligence algorithm that can decode brain waves. The study enabled the unfortunate woman, who could not speak for 20 years, to be able to communicate again. An avatar created for the woman puts the waves in her brain into words as she makes an effort to speak. Moreover, this avatar could convey the facial expressions of the woman.

Treatments given to Ann Johnson in the past allowed her to only make head movements so she could communicate only 14 words per minute. But the latest study has greatly improved this situation. The woman can now speak, even through her avatar. According to the statement, communication has increased up to 80 words per minute, which means more than one word per second.

Commenting on the subject, Dr. Edward Chang explained why they needed such a method as “reestablishing the concrete way of communication.” As a result, with this study, Ann Johnson can communicate with people in a natural way, by speaking, even though she no longer uses her own voice…
