Google celebrates the 15th anniversary of Chrome with a new design. The new look of the web browser will adopt Google’s Material You design. Alongside the new modern design with dark light theme option, the updated Chrome Web Store will come with new search tools in the Google search side panel. Starting next week, Chrome will have a new look on the desktop. Based on the Material You design language, Google says it’s revamped it with a focus on the readability of icons in Chrome, and new color palettes have been created that better complement the tabs and toolbar. Chrome preferences such as dark and light mode will work more compatible with the operating system. There are other improvements that make the browser easier to use, such as a more extensive menu for quick access to Chrome extensions, Google translate, Google password manager, and more.
Chrome Web Store is being renewed
The Chrome Web Store is also being updated with the Material You design language. Google states that with this design, users will discover useful extensions more easily. In addition to having a new and modern interface, the store will offer more personalized recommendations, along with new categories such as AI-powered extensions and editorial highlights.
There are also improvements in terms of security. Security Audit now includes extensions. Chrome will help identify extensions that are recently removed from the store, violate policies, or are potentially malicious.
Google Search side panel
Searching in Chrome is getting easier. While on a web page, you can access the Google Search side panel by selecting the “Search this page with Google” option from the three-dot menu. Through this panel, which can be pinned to the toolbar, it will be possible to learn more about the source of the page or to start another search altogether.
AI features
Google talks about the generative artificial intelligence (SGE) feature in the search it announced last month. Chrome will display a list of AI-generated highlights, with links that will take the user directly to the information they’re looking for on the page. The “Explore on page” feature will allow the user to see direct answers in articles containing questions.
Real-time secure browsing
The Google Safe Browsing feature, which protects the user by flagging dangerous sites and files, will now run in real time. Each previously visited site was compared to a locally stored list of known bad sites. This list was updated every 30 – 60 minutes. However, since fraudulent and malicious sites emerged faster, there were sites that escaped Google’s control. Google aims to provide 25% better protection against malware and phishing threats by reducing the time between threats being identified and blocked.Chrome continues its leadership
According to Statcounter data, Google Chrome remains the most used web browser on desktop with a market share of 63.52%. Chrome is followed by Safari with 13.02%, Microsoft Edge with 11.15%, and Mozilla Firefox with 6.18%.
