The widespread use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has also increased the use of headphones. The earphone models that have dominated the market lately are undoubtedly in-ear models. Commenting on these popular products, Trakya University International Hearing Studies Research and Application Center Director Prof. Dr. Cem Uzun said that in-ear headphones may not be as innocent as they seem.
“In-ear headphones transfer the noise level directly to the ear without reflecting it outside. That’s why we recommend people affected by noise not to listen to music with earplugs, and if they have to wear headphones, they should prefer headphones that completely cover the ear. This way, the sound will not be given directly to the channel.” prof. According to Cem Uzun, people who use in-ear headphones for a long time should have a hearing test.
“Can cause hearing problems”
prof. Dr. Cem Uzun stated that they do not recommend the use of headphones anyway, but that the risk is high in in-ear headphones. Mentioning that these products can cause hearing problems, the scientist used the following statements on the subject:
Due to our natural structure, our body interprets these sounds by taking the hearing from the outside with the help of the auricle. It is recommended not to use headphones, if possible, in order to prevent the sounds from coming directly to the membrane. For example, if we think of truck drivers, more hearing loss occurs in the ears on the side of the glass over time, or think of those who use guns, more damage occurs in the ear closer to the explosion sound. That’s why in-ear headphones can cause problems as they transmit sound directly. For this reason, we do not recommend this type of headphones. Earplugs are relatively safe.
