Microsoft has been discontinuing WordPad, which has been automatically installed in Windows operating systems since the release of Windows 95. The text editor, which supports RTF, DOC, ODT and other popular formats, will say goodbye to users after almost thirty years.

Microsoft has released an official document stating that WordPad will no longer be developed, will not receive new features or updates, and will be removed from the operating system with a future Windows update. Microsoft advised users to use Microsoft Word for rich text documents such as .doc and .rft, and Notepad for plain text documents such as .txt.

Of course there are alternatives to WordPad and they have no shortcomings. For example; Notepad, which has recently become stronger with its tabbed interface and auto-save feature, is sufficient for basic text editing. Microsoft Word is an option for those looking for a more advanced editor.
