New information about AMD’s Ryzen 8000 series continues to come. The latest information claims to keep some of the desktop processors codenamed “Granite Ridge” the same as AMD’s current Ryzen 7000 series processors.

In our previous news, we told you that AMD’s Ryzen 8000 desktop processor family will be released on the AM5 socket in 2024. The next-gen family was expected to support Zen 5 CPU cores and RDNA 3.5 iGPU cores, but things seem to have changed since AMD announced the CPU lineup on its official slide in June 2023.

IOD may stay the same on Ryzen 8000

The slide clearly mentions 65W to 170W CPUs. This can include both APUs and CPUs but we know for sure that 170W is a power target not intended for Ryzen APUs. However, by using the next-gen Zen 5 core architecture, AMD will offer a huge leap in performance and power efficiency, but at the same time there will be no change to a chip die. It is said that this processor section will also be IOD (I/O Die).
Rumor has it that no changes have been made to the Ryzen 7000’s I/O die, meaning the 28 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, memory controllers, USB functions, and even the RDNA 2 iGPU cores will remain intact. This also means that the IOD could be based on the 6nm process node as before. However, desktop processors will also lack RDNA 3.5 GPUs.

Of course, this isn’t a major issue, as the iGPU in the Ryzen 7000’s is adept for very light workloads. Those who want to see RDNA 3.5 GPU cores on the AM5 platform will have to wait for AMD’s APU series. AMD has not yet released the Ryzen 7000G “Phoenix” family for desktop computers, and there is no clear release date for now.
