Tesla started to turn its direction to AMD in processor supply, which started with Nvidia and continued with Intel. Tesla, which has become much larger than many automobile giants, has recently reached a value of 1 trillion dollars. However, despite this size, Tesla is among the companies that have had their share of chip shortages. Here, the company is putting different alternatives into use in order to overcome this shortage.
AMD Ryzen is now available for Tesla Model Y
Tesla first shook hands with AMD for the Model S and X in-car entertainment system, which can also be played. In this sense, a gaming computer equipped with an AMD Ryzen chip with 10 teraflops of processing power and RDNA2 GPU hardware has settled in cars. However, new details emerging in China herald that the same features are coming in Model Y.
The expression AMD Ryzen appeared in the software codes of the new Tesla Model Y car released in China. In this sense, it has been understood that Tesla will switch to AMD Ryzen chips in models in China.
However, when Tesla changes a model, it applies it to all variations. Accordingly, the Chinese version of the car is an indication that all Model Ys will use the same chip.
Effects of Tesla and the Chip crisis
Automotive is one of the sectors hit by the chip crisis. Advances in technology in recent years have already caused cars to switch to chip technology. However, electric cars need much more advanced chips in this sense. Especially Tesla needs powerful chips for driverless car technology. However, the brand designs the artificial intelligence chip it uses in the self-driving car. The crisis affected Tesla less, which produced this chip for Samsung.
Tesla turned to microcontrollers instead of chips at this point. In this sense, the brand started to use different chips and microcontrollers in different fields. These hardware work in harmony with each other thanks to the software developed by Tesla. Thus, the brand has alleviated the chip crisis that will continue for two more years.
However, both Tesla and other auto giants will need to find a more permanent solution for this crisis. The supply crises that started with the pandemic are still in effect today. Especially the Nu variant of the corona, which develops defense against antibodies, also caused concern. A new peak in the world may deepen the supply crises even more.
