The foldable phone market seems to be the only bright spot in the smartphone industry this year. Samsung became the largest maker of foldable phones in the second quarter, outpacing Huawei by 32 percent to 30 percent in market share. Huawei actually had the first and third best foldable models by shipments. The Mate X3 was the top-delivered phone from April to June, while the clamshell Pocket S came in third.

With the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung had the second and fourth best-selling foldable devices in the second quarter. Vivo’s X Flip device took fifth place. Clamshell models took the lead in the second quarter, taking over 53 percent of the foldable market.

This quarter, DSCC expects foldable shipments to hit a new record with 6.9 million units delivered worldwide. This represents an annual increase of 10 percent over the third quarter of 2022 and a staggering 200 percent increase from the second quarter. Samsung’s market share is expected to decline in the third quarter of this year.

In the foldable panel market, Samsung Display has started to decline. Samsung Display, which has a 63 percent share in all foldable models shipped, had a lower share compared to its 68 percent share in the previous year. This was Samsung Display’s lowest market share since the first quarter of 2021.
