While eSIMs are becoming more popular following Apple’s preferred eSIM roadmap for iPhones, Android is preparing to better support this function with a new eSIM transfer feature. According to the new information, the eSIM transfer feature, which Google has been working on for a while and expected to be released soon, will be QR-based.

Native eSIM transfer tool coming to Android

As Google announced earlier this year, it is working on an eSIM transfer feature on Android that will allow users to move their eSIMs locally between devices. This is a very important feature for the Android ecosystem as there is currently no native way to move eSIM between Android devices. This leaves the process entirely up to the operators and can be quite complex at times.

Apple has already made this process easier with a tool built into iOS that can transfer eSIM between iPhones by switching to eSIM-only on next-generation iPhones sold in the US. Thanks to this tool, Apple allows users to transfer eSIM between the two devices using their existing iPhone, with a wireless transfer process. On Android, however, Google seems to take a different approach.

Google has begun laying the foundation for eSIM transfer based on QR codes hidden within Play Services. As can be seen from the images, users are asked to scan a QR code to initiate the transfer process. On the other hand, this feature is not available to users for now, but laying the foundations shows that the feature may be released soon. Maybe Google can announce this with the Pixel 8 series.
