The developer of Baldur’s Gate 3 has revealed that one of the game’s leading NPCs is actually inspired by his own grandmother. First of all, let me state that; This post contains some spoilers for the first episode of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian Studios writer Rachel Quirke recently responded to an actress on Twitter who described her encounters with the character of Aunt Ethel, an old woman you may encounter in the game’s first episode.

The NPC has a heavy Irish accent and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind, but also offers some hilarious dialogue, as the player points out. But it turns out that Aunt Ethel is actually based on Quirke’s real grandmother.

“Fun piece of information – Aunt Ethel was inspired by my grandmother! Or we call her ‘Nana Juju,'” Quirke explains. “When I told her I wrote the character a little bit from her, she said, ‘It’s about time someone did this.'”

Those who haven’t yet met Aunt Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3 might want to stop reading here, because what makes this new information funny is that after a series of missions, the player and their party will discover that Ethel is actually a scary swamp witch in disguise.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge success in its first two weeks on PC and quickly became one of Steam’s greatest games of all time. The PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released on September 6, but players who pre-order will be able to download their game two days early.
