Payments giant Mastercard plans to launch a central bank digital currency program, including Rippleve Consensys.
Mastercard’s new program aims to advance CBDC innovation with partners such as Ripple, Consensys and Fireblocks. The popular payment company has announced that it has recruited a group of blockchain and payment services providers to participate in the program. Mastercard’s head of digital assets and blockchain, Raj Dhamodharan, said in a statement that the new CBDC program is designed to enhance collaboration with interested users.
The project is currently in its infancy
Expressing his views on the partnership, Dhamodharan said that the project is still in its infancy and said, “We believe that interoperability in payment services is a fundamental element.” Making a general comment on the CBDC issue, the head of blockchain made the following statements:
“If a government wants to build a CBDC and it wants it to be made available to businesses and consumers, you need to have day-first flexibility from a manufacturing, consumer perspective.”
Mastercard has not yet released detailed information about the new program. The payments giant stated that CBDCs should not be adopted directly and that the work of the CBDC Joint Program will facilitate central banks.
