A new regulation on which the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is working has emerged. According to the news on NTV, the ministry will re-adjust the labels on the food products with the regulation it will make. With the studies to be done, it is aimed to prevent misleading images and expressions on the labels of food products.
The regulation, which the Ministry has been working on and has opened for public view, seems to make life easier for citizens when it comes into force. Because with this arrangement, the “Contents” section on a food package will now be written 2.5 times larger. In this way, everyone will be able to see what is in a food they are considering buying. In addition, phrases such as “Contains sweetener” or “With sweetener” will now be written much larger.
The draft regulation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is as follows:
The name of the food and the ingredients information will be written 2.5 times larger, depending on the size of the package, according to the current regulation.
The area where the brand is written on the largest surface of a package was determined as the “Basic Field of View”. The name of the food will also be required to be written in the primary field of view.
Misleading images, names and expressions will not be used in foods that are similar to each other and may be confused with similar foods by consumers.
For similar foods that may be confused by consumers, the name of the food; Where the brand is mentioned on the label, it will be written in the same font size as the brand of the food, right next to or below the brand of the food.
On the label of a food that uses only flavoring instead of fruit or vegetables in its production, there will be no visuals related to flavoring. The name of the food is flavored “…. Flavored” and wherever the name of the food is mentioned, it will be placed at least 3 mm.
In similar foods that may be confused by consumers, using the name of a food that does not have the characteristics, “…. taste”, “… taste”, … enjoyment, etc. expressions will not be used.
If the image of a food ingredient is on the label or in the product name, it should be placed wherever the image is or next to or below the product name in such a way that the amount of that ingredient is at least 3 mm.
For foods containing sweeteners, the words “Contains sweetener” or “With sweetener” shall be placed at least 3 mm next to or below the name of the food in the basic field of view.
