FBI warns public against scam
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has infiltrated its social media accounts, warning against criminal actors pretending to be legitimate people in the NFT and crypto space. It also voiced concerns about fraudulent websites, urging victims to avoid scammers using legitimate platforms to steal their NFT or crypto.
As the number of victims of such scams continues to increase, the FBI has urged people to be wary of financial fraud schemes targeting active users in the NFT community. Scammers can gain direct access to NFT developer social media accounts or create similar accounts to post fraudulent posts. These posts are often aimed at creating a sense of urgency by using phrases such as “limited supply” and refer to promotions as “surprise” or a previously unannounced NFT.
The FBI added that links provided in such announcements lead victims to fake websites that direct victims to phishing links that appear to be a legitimate extension of a fake NFT project. Scammers ask people to link their wallets to claim or buy NFTs, and then they can steal people’s funds or assets through these links.
