The biggest search in decades for the Loch Ness Monster (or Nessie), which loves to hide from researchers and whose existence has never been proven—probably never will—begins later this month.
The staff of the recently renovated Loch Ness Center in Drumnadrochit collaborated with Loch Ness Explorations (LNE), a group of independent and volunteer researchers, to undertake the largest surface water survey in over 50 years. The center is seeking more Nessie hunters to join the search scheduled for August 26-27.
The search is expected to be the largest of its kind since the Loch Ness Research Bureau studied the bay for signs of the mythical beast in 1972. Research equipment that has never been used before in the lake will be placed in the area to reveal the secrets of the mysterious waters.
Among them are drones that will produce thermal images of the water from the air using infrared cameras, as it is believed that observing the heat from above can provide a crucial component in identifying any strange anomalies. A hydrophone will also be used to detect acoustic signals underwater and listen for Nessie-like beings, and other technologies that could be useful in the search.
The Loch Ness Center and LNE are looking for volunteers to keep an eye on any breaking or other unexplained movement in the water over the weekend. Each morning, LNE’s Alan McKenna will instruct volunteers at the center on what to watch out for and how to record findings. There will also be a briefing in the afternoon to review the day’s events.
