ChatGPT recently discovered a new type of malware targeting Mac computers. The investigation was conducted by Guardz Cyber Intelligence Research (CIR), a cybersecurity firm, and found the malware called Exploit. According to what they found, this malware is selling for up to $60,000 on a Russian cybercrime forum.
Researchers initially used an AI chatbot to guide themselves in search of new Mac threats sold on the dark web, Guardz CIR reported. Guardz researchers came across ads for Exploit after being directed by ChatGPT to search Russian cybercrime forums.
Exploit is a Hidden Virtual Network Computing (HVNC) tool that provides remote access and control of a victim’s Mac without their knowledge. Exploit vendors say they can gain full access to a target’s machine and additional capabilities can be added for additional fees. The malware has reportedly been on sale since April 2023.
No known cases yet
Guardz stated that they have not yet found a known Exploit case on the internet. In addition, Apple has not yet commented on Guardz’s findings. However, the malware’s availability on criminal forums raises concerns about possible future attacks against Mac users.
In their explanation of how Exploit works, the cybersecurity team said, “The threat actor, with a one-time price of $60,000, gives you a wide variety of options from 10 to 13.2, which supports persistence, runs without any permission from the user, has reverse shell and remote file manager. “It will provide a malicious tool that has been tested on macOS versions.”
This discovery highlights the growing threats MacOS faces as cybercriminals try to exploit more victims. It is recommended that all technology users always keep their software up-to-date and use security tools to help detect and prevent malware infections.
