Indian hacker group APT Bahamut has been found to steal data stored in popular messaging programs such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Viber and Facebook Messenger by installing a fake application called Safe Chat on devices running Android operating system.

According to Bleeping Computer, cybersecurity experts have discovered that the most recent hacker attacks are carried out via phishing messages on WhatsApp. Through the SafeChat app, hackers steal call logs, text messages and GPS location data.

Phishing method is used

Hackers use a clever approach to convince their victims to switch to a more secure platform by installing Safe Chat. The app has an interface similar to a real messenger and a user registration process that helps build trust with potential victims.

When creating a profile in the app, the fake messenger asks for permissions to access various data and features, allowing hackers to get all the information they need.
