“The momentum behind League of Legends has grown steadily since 2016, when we last held the World Championship in the Americas. We want to bring our global sport back to North America in full-fledged fashion and support fans in four cities in three countries, if COVID-19 allows. And we’d love to welcome you in their stands,” said Naz Aletaha, Global Leader of LoL Esports.

“The World Championship is an event that showcases the best players and teams in our sport. We look forward to sharing it with fans in North America and the rest of the world.”

In the World Championship, the pinnacle of LoL Esports competition, teams from 12 different regions compete against each other to become the World Champion. Held in a different region each year after the regular season, 24 teams from Riot’s 12 professional leagues battle to be crowned the best team in the world. The 2020 World Championships broke previous records by reaching 45.95 million simultaneous viewers worldwide and an average of 23.04 million viewers per minute.

In the World Championship Final in November 2021, last year’s champions and the clear favorites of the tournament, DWG KIA from the South Korean league LCK, faced EDward Gaming, who finished first in the LPL. After a breathtaking five-game streak, EDG lifted the Summoner’s Cup and received championship rings from Mercedes-Benz. The 2021 World Championship broke the viewership records at the 2020 World Championship. A report with official numbers will be shared in December.

More information on the 2022 World Championship will be announced at a later date.
