Samsung this week shared its second quarter earnings report for the quarter ending June 30, 2023. Revenues were down six percent from the previous quarter, mostly due to the decline in smartphone shipments, and the company reported a massive $3.4 billion operating loss, but there’s a glimmer or two on the horizon.

Samsung expands 3nm mass production

Samsung said mass production of its third GAA (gate-all-around) product went smoothly as the company stabilized its 3nm process. Samsung added that it has designed an improved process for 3nm based on its mass production experience with GAA.

Analysts from Counterpoint Research said earlier this month that the smartphone industry experienced its eighth straight quarter year-on-year decline in the last quarter. Memory chip manufacturers have also been going through a tough time lately. TrendForce recently announced that it expects solid-state drive prices to drop another 13 percent in the third quarter. PC DRAM prices, on the other hand, seem to have bottomed out. However, these price decreases also indicate that the price increase globally is approaching.

On the other hand, Samsung is known to use the SF3E node (3GAE, 3nm gate-all-around early) to produce chips for many cryptocurrency miners, including MicroBot and PanSemi. We understand that a third crypto client is also using Samsung’s process, but the Korean tech giant did not mention any names. Making chips for crypto miners is seen as an excellent way for Samsung to test new manufacturing processes in commercial applications. Samsung expects global demand for electronics to gradually recover in the second half of this year, which it believes will lead to increased earnings from its components business.
